Nerve Disorders & Injuries
What are nerve disorders and injuries?
Nerves connect your brain and spinal cord to the muscles and skin giving you movement and feeling. Similar to static on a telephone line, nerve disorders or injuries can interrupt information conveyed between the skin or muscles and the brain. The nervous system consists of two parts:
- The central nervous system is made up of the brain and spinal cord.
- The peripheral nervous system is comprised of nerve fibers that branch off from the spinal cord and extend to the neck, arms, torso, legs, skeletal muscles and internal organs.
Peripheral nerve disorders are often a result of a disease such as diabetes, an infection, nerve compression such as carpal tunnel syndrome [link to carpal tunnel page on site] or an injury. Some people are born with peripheral nerve disorders. Symptoms vary widely but may include:
- Burning or tingling
- Muscle weakness
- Sensitivity to touch
How are nerve disorders and injuries diagnosed?
Your doctor will review your medical history, ask about any accidents or previous surgeries and discuss your symptoms with you. If your neurologic examination shows signs of a nerve injury, he or she may recommend diagnostic tests, such as electromyography (EMG), a nerve conduction study or noninvasive computed tomography (CT) scan, a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan.
How are nerve disorders and injuries treated?
Treatments vary, depending on the type of condition, but can include:
- Nonsurgical treatment such as acupuncture, massage therapy, medication, orthotics, physical therapy and rehabilitation or weight loss.
- Surgical repair. Depending on the type and severity of the injury, your doctor will discuss different methods of nerve repair and create a treatment plan that is appropriate for you.
